FAFSA Is Open Early to Everyone: What Families Should Do Before October 1

The 2027โ€“28 FAFSA is not waiting until October to become useful. Federal Student Aid says the form is now available to all students through its early-access testing period, even though the official full public launch is still scheduled for October 1.

For families in the middle of the college search, that makes the next week less about waiting and more about getting organized.

1. FAFSA early access is now open to everyone

Federal Student Aid began beta testing in August with a limited group of students and families. It has now moved into a broader phase where anyone can participate through StudentAid.gov. This is the real 2027โ€“28 FAFSA, not simply the prototype used for training.

If you prefer to wait, that is fine too: the Department of Education still says fafsa.gov will be available to everyone by October 1. But either way, now is the time to create StudentAid.gov accounts for the student and any required contributors and gather the financial information you may need.

2. Check Common App before assuming you need to apply everywhere first

Common App's Direct Admissions program allows participating colleges to make proactive offers based on information already in a student's profile. Common App says students who qualify can receive an offer in as little as a week, and the offer is nonbinding.

That can be a useful way to discover schools you did not originally consider. Still, an admission offer is only one part of the decision. Compare academic programs, graduation outcomes, campus fit, scholarships and the real net price before adding a school to your final list.

3. Early application deadlines are closer than they look

Common App does not support first-year fall application deadlines earlier than October 15, but colleges set their own Early Action and Early Decision dates. Many fall in November. For example, Georgetown lists November 1 for Early Action, while Quinnipiac lists November 15 for Early Action.

Early Action is generally nonbinding. Early Decision is typically binding, so families should be especially careful about cost and fit before choosing it.

๐Ÿ’ก Don't rush just to be first. The goal this week is to get organized โ€” accounts created, financial info gathered, deadlines confirmed โ€” so a missing login or an overlooked date doesn't quietly narrow your options later.

What to watch next

October 1 remains the big financial-aid date. Between now and then, families should decide whether to use FAFSA early access, make sure all accounts are ready, review each college's actual application deadline, and check Common App for direct-admission offers.

The goal is not to submit everything as fast as possible. It is to prevent an avoidable deadline or missing account from narrowing your choices.
