AP Exam Registration Is Closer Than You Think: What to Check Before November 13
While seniors focus on college applications, another deadline is approaching for many high school students: AP exam registration. College Board’s final ordering deadline is November 13, 2026, for full-year and fall-semester courses. But that is the deadline for schools to submit orders—not necessarily the date students must sign up. A few checks now can prevent avoidable fees and confusion later.
1. Your school’s deadline may be earlier
College Board recommends that schools organize exam orders in early October and requires AP coordinators to submit most fall orders by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on November 13. Schools often need students’ decisions and payments before then. Ask your AP teacher or coordinator for the local registration deadline, payment instructions and cancellation policy. Do not assume that November 13 is a student-facing cutoff.
Students in courses that begin after November 13 generally follow a separate March 12, 2027, ordering deadline. Confirm which schedule applies to your class.
2. Check My AP instead of assuming you are registered
Sign in to My AP and confirm that every intended course appears. Students join with a code from their teacher; exam-only students receive a code from the coordinator at the testing school. At some schools, My AP displays a “Register for the Exam” button that students must select. At others, students are registered automatically when they join. If anything looks wrong, ask the coordinator to verify the exam order rather than relying on a class roster alone.
3. Understand the price—and the potential payoff
The published 2027 AP Exam fee is $99 per exam in the United States and Canada. Schools may charge more to cover administration. A late order for many fall courses can add $40; an exam canceled or unused after the ordering deadline can also trigger a $40 fee, with exceptions. Eligible students may receive a $37 College Board reduction and, depending on the state, additional assistance. Ask what your family would actually owe.
AP scores can sometimes earn college credit or advanced placement, but policies differ widely by institution and subject. Use College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search, then confirm details with colleges on your list. Consider preparation time and exam cost alongside possible credit—not an assumed guarantee of tuition savings.
4. Know how the 2027 exams will work
The 2027 AP Exam administration runs May 3–14. College Board says AP exams are now digital, with most courses using fully digital or hybrid testing through Bluebook; portfolio-only subjects have a separate process. AP Statistics and world language exams transition to fully digital formats in 2027. The distinction matters: hybrid exams still include handwritten free-response answers. Find your exact course format and ask your school when students will practice with the testing tools.
What to watch next
This week, confirm your school’s signup date and My AP status. Before November 13, check the fee, available assistance, and the exam subjects you truly plan to take. In the spring, watch for the March 12 deadline for courses that start later and the May testing calendar. A little organization now leaves more room to focus on learning rather than paperwork.
